Johnson Matthey's Clean Air business is the leading supplier of catalytic emission control systems for gasoline and diesel vehicles. In our Technology Centre based in Royston near Cambridge, we develop advanced catalytic solutions using state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies for mass-production of emission control catalysts. With ever changing emission control legislation, the success of our business relies heavily on the continuous development of our auto catalysts and manufacturing processes. Role: Two fixed term contract opportunities have arisen to join the Analytical team working within new state of the art laboratories at the Royston site. The laboratories provide support to all areas of research and development within the Technology Centre, including production facilities and Clean Air customers. The Technology Analytical Group utilise a range of analytical techniques to characterise raw materials, intermediate products and finished catalysts using physical and chemical instrumental methods to support Product and Process Development activities. Opportunities are available in the following areas of the analytical team: The ICP/XRF team dedicated to supporting the Technology Centre and Prototype Samples Group with analysis of intermediate and finished catalyst products using XRF/ICP instrumental techniques for the quantification of elemental compositions Catalyst Characterisation Team utilise a range of analytical techniques to characterise raw materials, intermediate products and finished catalysts to support the Product and Process Development activities. They also support the automotive Sales and Marketing Teams and external customers with technical problem solving. We are looking to recruit talented individuals into both areas of the Analytical group. Key responsibilities: Perform laboratory analysis using the appropriate analytical techniques Organising your own workload to make the most efficient use of the laboratory equipment and to meet customer tight deadlines Develop methods for analysing materials and validating results Be involved in solving technical problems The interpretation of analytical data and the preparation of technical reports and presentations Provide advice to Technology submitter groups on the best measurements to meet their requirements In addition, you will assist with equipment maintenance activities and participate in Analytical Group continuous improvement and problem-solving projects. Are you the ideal candidate? You will have: A degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a related science discipline. Previous laboratory experience. A sound knowledge of the principles behind analytical chemistry. Working knowledge of elemental analytical techniques. Experience of XRF/ICP and an understanding of statistical techniques. An awareness of laboratory best practice according to ISO/IEC 17025 (desirable). Pro-active and self-motivated with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work to tight deadlines and targets, possess a flexible approach to working and demonstrate consistent attention to detail.
