Newmarket Town Council require a Caretaker

Job Purpose

  1. To undertake caretaking duties to the Town Council’s properties and venues.

  2. To work with the Town Keeper to assist with a range of maintenance, repairs and inspections of the Town Council’s properties and facilities.

  3. To support Events Manager in the setting up and operation of events in venues and outdoors.

  4. To deputise for the Town Keeper as necessary.

Job Purpose

  1. To undertake caretaking duties to the Town Council’s properties and venues.

  2. To work with the Town Keeper to assist with a range of maintenance, repairs and inspections of the Town Council’s properties and facilities.

  3. To support Events Manager in the setting up and operation of events in venues and outdoors.

  4. To deputise for the Town Keeper as necessary.

 

Main Responsibilities

The Caretaker is expected to exhibit a reasonable degree of self-management to ensure tasks are completed efficiently, effectively and safely; advising and supporting colleagues as necessary. The time that hours are worked will vary from week to week depending on service needs. A flexible approach to working will be required, to ensure service standards are achieved. 

  1. To set up the facilities for events and activities including moving equipment and furniture as required.

  2. To support outdoor events promoted by the Council or one of its partners.

  3. To work as a Duty Manager at either Council venue for smaller or regularly booked events and in that respect be the first aider and fire warden.

  4. To carry out and record the weekly fire alarm, fire extinguisher and emergency lighting tests for the Memorial Hall and Severals Pavilion.

  5. To formally inspect all of the Town Council’s facilities and maintain records.

  6. To assist with a range of tasks involved in the maintenance of public facilities.

  7. To assist with undertaking a range of minor maintenance and repairs on the Council’s buildings, facilities and equipment for which general “handyperson” skills will be necessary.

  8. To open and close the Town Council facilities for events and activities working with the Events Manager as required, including as required the Memorial Gardens.

  9. On a rota basis, to be a named key holder on call to attend the Town Council’s facilities if required out of hours.

  10. To have an “eyes open” approach around the Town and report highway issues such as uneven paving, damaged traffic bollards and littered areas or fly tipping to Town Council Manager for alerting the County and district councils as well as street lights out for notification to either the Town Council’s contractor or district council.

  11. Under the direction of the Town Keeper, to undertake detailed clearing of litter, dog fouling, graffiti and vegetation in public areas to build on the statutory role of the Council and to raise local standards.

  • To ensure the Memorial Garden public conveniences are checked daily when open for defects and cleanliness. Routine cleaning is carried out, out however urgent deterioration may need to be dealt with.

  • To undertake routine daily litter picking, including emptying litter bins in the Memorial Gardens.

  • To check the Play equipment daily and clear away any litter or fouling and undertake minor maintenance to ensure safety is maintained. To switch the water feature on and off as necessary.

  • To support environmental or community initiatives by the Council or its partners.

  • To assist and encourage individuals and voluntary/community groups in protecting and enhancing the local environment and heritage. To support voluntary clean teams within the town.

  • Communicate & liaise with the public, partners, stakeholders and other staff in a positive way.

  • To maintain all other relevant work records and documentation to ensure compliance with procedures, policy and safety standards.

  • To provide support for the operation of any of the Council’s other services or facilities, as necessary.

  • To promote the principles of customer care, equality, quality management and good health and safety standards.

  • To undertake other tasks allocated by the Council which are within the competence and capability of the post holder.
