About the position of Head of Development This new role will not only be completely hands-on for a seasoned developer, but also lead and manage a team of specialist software developers, by supporting them in building industry-leading products using robust architectural practices and innovative software solutions that are fit for purpose. You will be responsible for leading a permanent team of developers to meet the company's goals and objectives, by being able to protect, mentor and grow the team. Create and maintain a professional culture within the team, where individuals take ownership and are fastidious and proud of delivering excellence and quality. Responsible for the quality and technical approach taken by team members, ensuring it is in-line with the company strategy - ensuring that projects are delivered on time to budget, this is a definitely a hands-on role where you will be expected to code and to hold the overall technical knowledge around client solutions and platforms. With a minimum of 10 years relevant experience, the Head of Development responsibility is to engineer web solutions that meet the clients' needs and help shape digital platform services. You will be as comfortable attending meetings with our clients as developing and scoping work with internal teams. With previous experience in line management, you will be responsible for your teams, support and mentoring of junior members of the team. Your creativity and technical excellence will demonstrate itself in a wide range of products and services which will help the client to distinguish itself from the competition and offer its' clients a truly engaging and superior experience. As a commercially astute Lead who understands the practicalities of resourcing and delivering a digital project well - working alongside the Customer Service team to ensure work is delivered on time and to budget. The position reports to: CEO Overall, the position holder will : Effectively manage relationships with client contacts (client facing) and internal teams Work within client guidelines to produce innovative solutions Present work and articulate technical executions at client level Train and lead, both formally and informally, members of the team in commercial and technical skills Monitor the performance and ability of junior developers in team Work alongside the Management Team to improve internal and external testing procedures (browser, functional (including SIT) and accessibility testing) Specific duties include: Running full production process ensuring continuous delivery practices Being the lead architect, developer and mentor to the development team while doing some coding alongside them Innovation, using the latest technologies Overseeing strategies for both product and bespoke code base platform definition and implementation Producing accurate and detailed technical documentation, i.e., wireframes and functional specs, user manuals, user journeys Producing comprehensive and accurate estimates for work Testing work thoroughly against specifications and test plans to avoid errors and re-work Managing freelance, outsource development teams if required Technical skills required: Able to produce high quality and standards compliant back/front-end code (HTML5, LINQ, ASP.NET MVC, C#) Extensive knowledge of MS SQL Server and Cloud SaaS, PaaS and IaaS Expert knowledge of source control systems (GIT) Expert knowledge of Continuous Integration (Team City) and deployment tools Expert knowledge and practical experience with implementing CMS search capabilities using Lucene and SOLR Experience (desirable) with Umbraco/Sitecore CMS Experience (desirable) Angular JS Extremely analytical and a great problem solver when it comes to issues with code / application Overall, the Head of Development is expected to: Be a natural born leader, able to translate complex technical concepts into easy-to-understand language for client and internal team to understand Be a strong leader, with a professional attitude and lead by example work ethic Be bright, highly self-motivated and driven, with the ability to multi-task and stay organised in a dynamic work environment Be analytical and inquisitive, with excellent attention to detail Be credible, confident, and articulate, with excellent communication and presentation skills and the gravitas to deliver ideas clearly and concisely to internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority Be reliable, flexible, and co-operative Be personable, approachable, diplomatic, and tactful, with an enthusiastic and motivational personality and have an overall passion for keeping up with technology personally and professionally.
