Learning Mentors for English and Maths
Smithdon High School is seeking to appoint two passionate and driven Learning Mentors to join our team for September 2026. These specialist roles are dedicated to supporting our English and Maths departments.
The successful candidates will specialise in one of these core subjects, joining a vibrant community of ambitious educators. We are looking for individuals who are committed to academic excellence within the classroom.
Start Date: September 2026
Salary: Scale D, Point 6, Salary £13.47/hour approx. £18,044/year (£25,989 FTE – please note this salary will be pro rata)
Hours: 30 hours/week, 39 weeks/year

Purpose of the Roles
To support students in either English or Maths, specifically those that are showing signs of underperforming, helping them overcome their barriers to learning and fully engage with lessons to become more effective learners, and to improve academic progress.
You will need to have good communication and interpersonal skills, the belief that all students, regardless of their personal circumstances can excel and the ability to set high expectations in order to motivate and inspire.
Responsibilities, but not limited to:
● Work on a one-to-one basis with students who have missed parts of the curriculum or who have specific weaknesses.
● Work with small groups of students during lesson times to either support their normal English lesson, or extend their understanding of specific topics.
● Work within a classroom supporting the class teacher to help aid pupils' understanding.
● Deliver interventions, for example, handwriting/literacy or numeracyprogrammes, and support the completion of English/Maths homework.
● To plan lessons/ activities/ tutorials and sequences of lessons to meet pupils’ individual learning needs.
● To be accountable for pupil progress and attainment levels in intervention groups and report regularly on the progress of all pupils accessing interventions.
● To assess, monitor and record the progress of pupils in your intervention groups, set well-grounded consistent expectations and give them clear and constructive feedback.
Personal and Professional Conduct
Staff are expected to demonstrate consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct and uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school.
They must have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school in which they work, and maintain high standards in their own attendance and punctuality.
